Competition in the Hair Industry

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

Your customers don’t want to know about all the ways that you imitate your competitors. They want to know how you have innovated in order to set your business apart from the rest

I’m on a flight from Chicago and I started watching a film on Brandon Marshall. If anyone’s into football or mental health awareness, check out this guys story.

He made an amazing point during the short film produced by GQ. Sometimes we have members of our team, our salon, our our inner circle of stylist that are just booming!

In short they are on fire. The hair they touch looks like a magic wand was waved by it. Their timing is on point. Their performance is admirable. You want to see your friends succeed. But do you really? Are you jealous of how easy it comes to them. Do you feel like you deserve what they have. Do you know that they are your competition ?

I know, I know our salon is not a competition zone. We lift each other up here! We are a team!

Well sweetie, that’s what we all SAY, and rarely is that the Truth. Resentment resides for those above you if you feel disconnected from the group.

Truth is YES your best bud can be your biggest competitor. Guess what once you separate yourself from that person the competition only grows stronger. I encourage you to look in the eyes of that person and see what they see. Watch their moves, learn from them. Don’t just mimic but watch, learn, & tweak. I want to see all my staff do well always! But I also know we are always competing against one another for the next promotion the next gig and the next big client to add to our account. We all want to grow our social media and get the notice we deserve for the craft we preform.  I want them to do good so I use them for motivation to push myself to be as great as they are. You see the person you’re looking up to isn’t always looking down on you.

You’d be surprised to find out they most likely feel the same about you. Constantly worrying if you’re going to get the next color client or if you are getting the Clients they want to be servicing. They want you to succeed as much as I’m sure my team is happy for my success.

But don’t get it twisted, I know there’s many who want my spot. Who wants to be where I am. Who would do whatever they need to achieved the next level of greatness!

That’s exactly why they are on my team! I don’t want Prima Donnas on my team I want a pack of Wolves that are hungry and that havn’t eaten in 3 or 4 days, as Brandon Marshall puts it! They push me to do great things cause I see them fighting to do them and that creates the passion and fight in me. I want to lead them to greatness but I want to keep them in the pack.  With numbers comes strength. As a solopenuer you can have a lot, with a team you can have Everything. I can only do so much. My pack is my strength. No big business or success was lead solo.  The more we push each other the better we as a whole become. Surround yourselves with those you strive to be more like. You’re the sum of those around you!

They are my Wolfpack! We are the dogs, that take what we want. Our pack is strong. Is yours?
